STATE OF THE UNION: summertime shopping

It's been far too long. I have so many things I want to write, I don't know where to start. Since a picture is worth a thousand words, I'll catch up this way. I really want to write about the spring shows, but I want to do it right...so for now, here are a few peeks from this past summer. (who knew? it sure feels like summer in SF right now!) Not really any deep statements about our economy, but glimpses of life around town.

I was walking past a toy shop and they caught my eye....looked sooo familiar. Saw a big sign called Calico Critters and stopped in to ask- yes, they were the same toys as my childhood, once called Sylvanian Families (wha?? i know) and now re-introduced years later. I never played dress up with Barbie, but instead played house with these fuzzy creatures.
(side note: i just looked it up and there's a huge battle between the critters. I used to watch Maple Town too!)

How is it already August?!
Sorry guys, I haven't had much time to read other blogs, let alone update my own.
Here are a few things I've been working on since June- and I promise to post pics!

INSPIRATION: the intersection of business and beauty

I love standing at the intersection of business and art.

Without business, beautiful things are merely a hobby.
(don't jump on me here)
Without art, business is just the ugly action of buying necessary stuff.

I mean, can something really be fashion if the single greatest shirt you designed that doesn't make the cut and is never produced? (it's the pre-production manager in me talking). Or in other terms, what about the editorial that never got picked up? Are those photos a hobby, or an editorial? Does it really matter?

okay, okay.
We all want the same things....

to communicate;
to call out-
to spread our message.
and hope that someone answers our call. To feel that we've either inspired, challenged, or made a contribution somewhere...and hopefully live off that message.

Because all we want is to do what we want. do what we love. express ourselves. and if we get a response from someone who either agrees with our viewpoint or ideas, it's justification. or a feeling of acceptance; that someone's in our corner. Or that we've taught someone to see something from a different or new point of view.

I've been doing a lot of thinking, and here are a few things I've learned along the way while traveling the intersection of business and beauty, between the fine line of indulgence and necessity-

from running retail chain store operations,
overseeing pre-production for apparel manufacturing,
retail sales at a contemporary/young designer boutique with high end clientele,
and creating sales strategies for-and-serving foodies.

1. the perfect job doesn't exist.
you have to create it for yourself.

2. support others, and the support will follow.
build and maintain your support system.

3. always work as though you are the owner of the company

4. to be successful you have to be passionate. you should love it. it will give you the edge.

5. it doesn't matter what everyone else is doing, just follow the voice in your heart.

6. always continue to stay inspired by exposing yourself to new experiences and ideas. shake up the game a little!

Granted, these aren't hard and fast rules...just ones i've decided to live my own life by. Or, have already found myself living...and wanted to make concrete and permanent out in the universe. They might even sound a bit trite. What about you? I'd love to hear your own life "rules." Maybe I'll find a few new words to live by. Thanks for letting me communicate.

FOOD: your glowing banana

Today I was doing research on food stands and came across this strangely phallic photo of chocolate covered bananas. Somehow, in neon green and covered in sprinkles, they make me feel a bit funny...and not one bit hungry. Just had to share.

They make me think of ninja turtles...

Every time I receive the new Athleta catalog, something sparks within me- and this time, I discussed my awe about it last night with my friend Albert of PorkBelly Studio. Wonder what he thought about me obsessively looking at pics of womens' chests and legs...

Athleta is an activewear brand owned by Gap. What I find most provoking about their campaigns are their models They specifically choose very fit, muscular models. I'm not knockin the image of a strong woman- and it's definitely a refreshing look at the female form outside of the sickly-thin fashion industry- but they are deliberately making a point here by casting the way that they did. I do like the bold strength behind the statement- because if you don't go against the grain, then you're following what everyone else is doing.

The models chosen by Athleta are all very similar, which tells me this is exactly what they were going for- buff, broad, strong women with solid, muscular torsos, small chests, and broad shoulders/wide ribcages (enough room to breathe!): a bit masculine, if you will. I mean, check this out:

now don't get me wrong- i appreciate a strong body- what I'm commenting on here is the standard vs. the real... or rather, the standard of conventional "pretty," and the reaction that initially hits me since we're never really exposed to body types like this in mainstream advertising.

But you know what? They are marketing to a very specific active customer...and whether they like it or not, it's probably not the same customer as Lucy and Lulu Lemon (the difference being sexy vs comfy while working out). Must be working though, since they've recently opened a Athleta bricks-and-mortar store in SF.

Am I the only one who reacts to this? Let me know!

DIY ON THE FLY: Halloween in April, Christmas in July

This is a super oldie, but it's been eating me away to post this...

I HATE buying Halloween costumes. I'm totally against spending large amounts of money on something so poorly made that will never work its way into my wardrobe, and will never be worn again. I'm all about the DIY costume. It's the only way I don't feel guilty for dressing up at Halloween.

I've been meaning to post this, but never quite got around to it....so here goes. Maybe it'll be much more appreciated now, since there aren't any Halloween posts around!

I'm also against the whole "Halloween is an excuse to dress like a slut", and all the sluttified costumes. Like slutty bumblebees. I'm actually a little familiar with cross dressing for Halloween. In elementary school, my mom thought it would be a brilliant idea for me to dress as Charlie Chaplin. And I agreed. As predicted, totally NOT the coolest costume you can be as a 10-year old girl. I had a bowler hat, suit, and 'stache...although I did have a lot of fun with the whole costume.

Anyway, I know I don't post many pics here of myself, but if you didn't know, I have pretty short hair (though growing out right now so I have a longerish mullety shag thing going on right now)...correction, I had pretty short hair at Halloween, and wanted a costume that I could work the short hair into so that I didn't have to buy a wig.
(I wanted to be judy jetson, but I guess I'll save her for another year)

This past year, I was Elvis. The white-jumpsuit-blinged-out Elvis. Okay, yes, I did have to buy a few things...but got so much more satisfaction out of my costume than if I had bought it. (and YES, there WAS a sexy caped Elvis at party city) I was one of the judges for the costume contest so I didn't win anything, but I was told by a lot of people I had one of the best costumes. But c'mon, that's expected when you're the hostess- you gotta bring it! (but the other costumes were very good)

Here's what I used to make my Elvis jumpsuit:
-cheap white poly fabric
-cheap gold lame fabric
-puffy fabric paint
-fabric glue
-plastic gems
-HUGE gold aviators
-fuchsia scarf
-white button down
-white flared/wide-leg bottoms
-huge metallic belt

I apologize, but didn't quite take step-by-step pics as I went (I was in a rush), so please use your imagination!

I didn't really measure anything, but made sure the cape would reach fingertip to fingertip, and used as much length as possible. I layered the white and gold (lining) fabric out and folded them in half. Then I traced a semi-circle, and cut out a small curve for the neck. I sewed the two pieces right sides together, then turned it and finger-pressed the edges.

Then I printed a pic of Elvis' famous eagle cape. (google image search elvis cape, there's some awesome images there!) His was bejeweled, but I wasn't about to invest that time and money into a Halloween costume, so it was a few colors of puffy paint for me. I just eyeballed it and hoped I woudn't run out of paint. Not a masterpiece, but definitely recognizable!

Next I bedazzled a button down with gems along the front. I would have actually tacked these on with thread so I could remove them later, but I was in a rush since I left them for last, so glue it was.

Put it all together, with a belt to cover the seam between the pant and top to look more like a jumpsuit.
Finishing touches- lots of hairspray and pomade, add sunglasses, and voila!

Did I look like Elvis? Let me know!

FOOD: soup dumpling heaven- Din Tai Fung

It's nothing new, but just the best:

Soup dumplings, or Xiao Long Bao (food blogger world calls them XLB) are some of the most satisfying things to eat. They're steamed dumplings formed with broth aspic jelly in them that liquefies when they steam, so each bite is a little sealed package of soup and dumpling in one.

My first experience with soup dumplings was at New York's landmark Joe's Shanghai, about 7-8 years ago. I can't wait to get myself back there some time- yes, they were that good. I had never had anything like it before, and I was smitten.

There aren't too many places that I crave as much as Joe's here on the west coast-and there are pages and pages of debate on the web regarding the "best" place. (just google it and see what happens!) Din Tai Fung is so far the closest thing I have found that fulfills my soup dumpling craving. There's even a north-south divide between SF & LA regarding dumplings...but I haven't yet had any that were blog-worthy in the bay. Any suggestions?

Here's a last look at my recent drive from LA back to SF. The grapevine was closed the previous day- no wonder! The mountains were covered in snow!

STATE OF THE UNION: real life on display

At it again at Anthropologie. Stopped in to check out the new goods...and was impressed with the display. Slightly creepy, with the influence being dead fish- and it had a very two-sided kind of appeal. A sort of "vintage," sunbleached I-don't-care-thrift-store kind of vibe to it.

But it also appealed to me as a statement piece, with the piles of dead anchovies recently found in Redondo Beach. (check out this ABC news clip here if you don't know what I'm talking about). Have you ever been to the Salton Sea? TOTALLY looks like this, with dead rotting fish bones everywhere.

Recently I read The Gospel According to Coco Chanel. It was kind of funny, reading about her beginnings with straw boaters, fishermen, and menswear inspirations- then walking into H&M and seeing a textbook translation of these items onto the salesfloor. It was a pretty good read (and fast too); if you're into Chanel, it's worth a quick read.

I love how this emulates a fishing net. such texture!

FOOD: Not-So-Simple Simplicity- Chez Panisse

Happy long birthday weekend to me! The Long Day Of Eating commenced with an amazing pizza from Pizzetta211. I mistakenly thought they had just opened, but apparently they've been around for 20 years. Where have I been? I guess under the same rock where I realized I didn't know about Rachel Zoe's pregnancy till she had her kid.

I had a San Marzano tomato pizza with mascarpone and arugula. LOVE arugula on pizza. The tomato sauce was zippy from a slight chili kick, a good balance for the peppery greens.

After digesting a few hours, was off to dinner at Chez Panisse. What a lesson on simplicity- so clean, but so deceivingly complex. Everything was perfectly balanced. The salad was dressed in a simple lemon-oil vinaigrette, but was so balanced it became complex.

So clean, beautiful, and homey. And...so clean. Even the protein walk-ins smelled appetizing...and I'm not usually one to find the smell of raw meat appetizing. The veggie walk-ins smelled so fresh. Amazing... *inhale*.....aaaaaahhhhhhh

I also learned something new. In 39 years of service, Chez Panisse has never repeated a menu. Ever. Now that's some on-your-toes creativity.

About me:
I am a veteran of the rag trade. I have worked in all areas of the fashion industry, most recently in apparel manufacturing in downtown Los Angeles. I have a background in fashion that ranges from apparel production and planning, merchandising, and editorial photoshoot styling, to retail management and visual merchandising. I have worked in designer and young designer, contemporary, and mass-markets, all of which lead me to completely understand what makes a consumer open up their wallet, at any price point. (including me!)

Fast forward a few years, (no, I won't tell you how many) and this food-living fashionista is a member of the restaurant industry. I am in charge of events, catering, menus, marketing, sales plans, product planning, and overall daily day-to-day sales. To be honest, it's actually not all that different from fashion. Where I used to oversee garment production from design to fabric ordering, to production, quality control, and shipping with a turnaround time of two months, I now work with the chef (aka "designer") to produce goods to sell within 2 days to 10 minutes. I get to think of new ideas, new directions, and creating an overall experience, and then get the satisfaction of seeing people enjoy their meals. I've found I really like making people happy through food.

Not all that strange: Fashion and Food have always gone hand-in-hand. Just think about your favorite store or boutique. They're usually right next to (or have on site) an excellent cafe or restaurant. It's the same consumer. A person with a taste for good style (open for interpretation) usually has a taste for good food as well. Or is just as easily persuaded in both.

I've been torn for a while on whether or not to choose between my love of fashion or food. They don't usually go together; you usually hear "foodie" or "fashionista", but not usually the both. I've finally decided to throw caution to the wind; why choose, why label or limit myself? This will be more about combining the things I love into a way of life. So go forth and prosper. Gooooooo!

TREND FORECAST: sheer pants

Something I love seeing this (and last) spring- and hope to see more of on the street: layer upon layer of filmy blacks and whites, varying in opacity, length, and movement. While textures not the focus in these monochromatic looks, interest is created on the building of layers upon layers. It reminds of me of an ink wash drawing, layering from light to dark. I love the slightly grungy, rock-n-roll feel-- but totally clean, finished, and polished.

My favorite piece from runways are the sheer pants used as a layering piece. It is a refreshing transition from the legging, but light and airy, and while sheer, doesn't hug all of the curves. Though in sharp blacks and whites, these clothes whisper of their strength without shouting.

TREND FORECAST: the long skirt

Runway shows are a place where designers can indulge in their dramatic, showstopping fantasies. Project Runway is a perfect example, where the designer with the floor-sweeping gown is often the winner of the challenge (or at least highly praised). This season, after a long run of minimalism and focus on wearability, designers got to play designer- and many didn't hold back, freely using yards of fabric for long, flowing full skirts and dresses.

The interesting take on all of these pieces is that they are all still...wearable. Unlike a big, over-the-top evening gown, these pieces all have a light, casual air about them. It was a refreshing sight after many seasons of "HARD" fashion: short, constructed tulip skirts, sparse (clean) pantsuits, crisp suiting fabrics- and too-tight-too-short body-conscious leggings and bodysuits.

Detailed patterns were printed onto sheer chiffons, and skirts were cut in full, floor-sweeping lengths in fabrics with gorgeous drape. Everything was cut to move freely, gracefully, and breezily. It was a visual breath of fresh air. We'll be seeing more of the long skirt!

No wonder we have "stars" like Snooki and the cast of Jersey Shore cramming the airwaves. I can't believe Katy Perry (or her stylist) didn't decide to at least cover up on top...or at least NUDE MESH (not sheer) OR a straight-across cut for the top....her target audience here is three, right?!!

Or is there some sort of secret Sesame Street target audience we all don't know about??

~~WANT~~. okay, no more want. I BOUGHT! I broke the challenge (for reals this time) tonight with this purchase...oooo I can't wait for these beautiful 80%20 boots by Ce Ce Chin to arrive from Karmaloop. (20% off coupon does feel nice...and makes these mighty affordable!)

I was torn and almost got em in black, but I felt they look so much cooler in elephant gray. Just a hint of pretty mixed with a nice hefty hiking boot weight...and with a built-in 3 inch heel! Here's to my hoping my little legs will get a dose of leg-lengthening magic! I'm looking forward to pairing with differing shades of grays, blacks and white- more specifically, semi-sheer tights in a charcoal gray with rolled shorts (while the weather still permits).

I love Ce Ce Chin's girl-meets-boy philosophy: "I wasn’t going to wear dunks, but I didn’t wear a lot of heels either," she says. " (from the designer's interview in NY Mag's The Cut) Very cool, my kinda gal.

BOTTOM-UP FASHION: a man, a plan, and a pair of scissors

Adam Saaks. Have you heard of him?

Wow...I guess I've been a bit out of the loop...or at least the Ed Hardy loop-- but Adam Saaks uses stylist tricks to create a name (and career) for himself. Very cool to see that he's a new kind of traveling "performer," with shows on his live t-shirt creating processes.

Here's a peek at what I was watching tonight:
He definitely makes it look easy. Look how fast he whips those scissors around!

I'm surprised I haven't heard of him till now, but I am shocked and pleased to see he has been going strong since at least 2007, shredding, tying, and crocheting t-shirts. What surprises me most is that he's still popular now-- and it appears his US exposure has been growing this past year. (just google/youtube him and look at all the recent blogs/vlogs DIY-ing his style) Surprising, since he's been doing the same thing for years and it's still popular, and also surprising since it's all for Ed Hardy- who has already experienced their peak of their own trend.

Yes, I must admit...I've definitely taken a pair of scissors to a shirt (or two, or five, or ten), tied a few knots, and revealed a bit of cleavage and then some (of the models' cleavage!!! haha...not mine!)...so these videos strike close to the heart.

Thanks to Daily Candy Swirl and their tempting sales, I was thisclose to hitting the "buy" button tonight. Two beautiful jackets by Veda were calling my name- the max jacket, and the golden jacket.

Since they were already sold out, I almost settled for another style, the arcana, but was able to collect myself and refrain from hitting that glowing button. I'm going to hold out for the perfect jacket...even if I don't know when it'll come- though I know it will- I just have to be patient!

Designer Lyndsey Butler's sumptuous leather creations are on my watch-list. (as the perfect leather jacket along with timeless, perfect boots) Even without fingering the soft leather, I can tell that her quality and mastery of the material is divine! Jackets are cropped and fitted, with the perfect drape- and lined! So many "fashion" leather companies who make cute, stylish, cropped little leather jackets from soft, thin leathers don't line them- my pet peeve. A quality jacket should have great lining...and preferably in silk. I also want a jacket that moves with me, and doesn't add bulk. Who wants extra weight, anyway?

I'll keep you all updated if I find THE ONE (jacket, that is) that breaks the challenge in a major way. In the meantime...drool along with me:

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT: Henri Charpentier

Okay, so it's not *really* about a designer this time...but my love of fashion and food (especially well designed, beautiful food!) is now conjoined, like a mutant hybrid of all that I love. Besides, I'd like to think it's more like designer food.

We were recently gifted with the MOST BEAUTIFUL box of cookies I had ever seen. Each Henri Charpentier cookie was delicately formed and nestled in its own little space. Somehow, I just knew these cookies were special, even before tasting them. Every last detail was seen to- from the printed vellum naming each cookie's delicate flavor to the charmingly embossed cookie-print tin lid- much like detail of a french seam, a hand-stitched blind hem, or even the unseen inside lining of a fabulous jacket.

But let's not forget about the taste- So delicate, so indulgent, so buttery, and oooo so good! The perfect sized bites exploded with Roquefort, melted into browned butter richness, and hinted at the light floral of rosewater. Definitely a designer cookie.

After a bit of google-digging, I found a bit more on this Japanese patisserie that pays homage to the great French Chef, and creator of crepes Suzette, Henri Charpentier. Reading about Here Comes The Food's experience at the Ginza bouqitue, I have now added the patisserie to my lists of must-sees for the next trip to Japan.

Cowabunga dude! Okay, so that's not really me above...but yes, I did provide you all with some pics of me attempting to catch a few waves. It's been exactly a month, and I've spent the last few weeks in my own "meditation" of sorts, reflecting on myself, focusing on my goals, and taking control of my own happiness. I didn't realize that I was an unhappy person, but after reading a few national bestsellers (Eat, Pray, Love anyone? and Don't Sweat the Small Stuff???), I'm starting to think that it might not be just me- but a national endemic of unhappy, discontent people.

Actually, about Eat, Pray, Love- I had heard about this book for years, but wasn't ever quite interested enough to pick it up. It seemed too spiritual. Maybe even a bit full of itself. It did catch my attention though, since I had completed my own solo trek around the world- including Italy and Bali- in 2003. So at the time, I dismissed it, having my own self-righteous moment with a been-there-done-that feeling.

I guess a few years (and Hollywood) was all it took, and I recently picked up the book for a decent read. It comes at a much more receptive time in my life, and I found it to almost be like having a conversation with someone who might understand my quest for inner happiness. I'm not a religious or spiritual person, but I do feel that being content is definitely linked to a more spiritual source.

Every day is a new opportunity to create a happier future for myself and those around me. Every day the slate is wiped clean, and the opportunity to take responsibility for my life presents itself.

So in honor of reconnecting with things that bring me happiness, here are a few of the things I've been doing the past month:

-surfing

It's been more of a "doing" month for me. I took a few surf lessons in the chilly Northern Cali waters- decked out in a wetsuit- and was pleasantly surprised to find that the neoprene armor protected me from the cold waters, and I had a great time! Looking forward to more practice and lessons to come...so that one day I can live out my hidden dream to be a tanned and toned surf bunny! (haha...I can dream, right?)

After a long hiatus, I have picked up my pencils again and am taking a drawing class. How nice it is to just sit and observe. Sort of like my own meditation. I've discovered the Sharon Art Studio in Golden Gate park, and absolutely love the bohemian, hippie, community vibe of the center. I will definitely be taking more classes here, and HIGHLY recommend them!

I love taking walks and spent the most beautiful days of gorgeous san francisco sun exploring the South Park area, imagining I was in Europe and sitting out in the sun. Felt a bit like a plant, soaking up the rays.

-refocusing

I also spent a good amount of time scouring google and picking peoples' brains. I have a few ideas lined up for potential growth areas of my career and life, and can't wait to start learning, implementing, and trying new things!

It's such a great feeling to take charge of your life- not sure about all of you- but I definitely need to do it every so often! Thanks for your patience, and coming back again!

Nothing like enjoying a balmy summer afternoon with great cocktails and even better company. We stumbled across a surprising gem at the Hotel Sofitel. The bar- Le Bar- was excellent.

Though a little pricey, the outdoor bar and decor was the perfect way to spend a lazy afternoon. I love finding those perfect places when you're not looking.

Today I stopped into Anthropologie for the first time in a loooong time, and was instantly wowed by their current displays. I'm ALWAYS wowed when I'm in there. I absolutely love this company's ability to meld large corporation business plans with crafted, artisan-minded displays.

i wouldn't have envisioned craft paper flowers to look so good- but it does.

I guess it's just visual merchandising at a genius level: they play at my emotional heartstrings and inspire me to want to break out the fabric and craft paper. I am torn to be inspired by something so entirely business at its core. It almost makes me sick to think that all of this has been created to try and get me to open my wallet and buy. Almost.

reminds me of old dried bouquets from high school, hanging from the ceiling. kinda goth. but somehow still works in the store setting...

But then again it makes me feel as though "I COULD DO THAT! WHY DON'T THEY HIRE ME?!" sigh.

Drooling over this jacket. Just another thing I don't need (again, life enhancement?!) but believe would just make me that much cooler/happier/closer to my dreamlife by owning. Nevermind it's really just a super expensive glorified windbreaker jacket- look at that beautiful sunny color- and forget nylon- it's a sumptuous silk! Ha. Yes, really...a necessity. But oh so nice to look at...and I just KNOW I'd wear it every day. (actually, that's the reason I can talk myself out of it...who wants to look like big bird every day?) But of course, I wouldn't look like BigBird in my imagination...

Anyway, I just love pieces like these. Effortless, slightly boyish and with a harder edge (look at that neckline/collar) but with enough of a feminine twist (silk!) to make it special. I'm a sucker for jackets, what can I say?? Oh well. I figure posting it here would be juuuust as good as owning it. At least in a virtual way...

Yesss...I'm $189 richer by not buying this jacket. Is that how it works?! That mean's I've already made a fortune tonight!

Although I know i haven't been very interesting lately, I still haven't caught up with real-life enough to catch up with my virtual one. BUT, in other, more interesting news, (well, interesting to me), I just won out over my inner battle by narrowly missing an online shopping binge. After quickly adding many items to my shopping cart, I then emptied it one by one, taking the time to think about each item and imagining how my wardrobe would be improved. Then thought again if then my life would be improved at all. And the answer was no. So one by one, out they all went.

So even though I broke down with my sandals...(hey! I did mention in my original challenge post, that shoes and accessories would be allowed!) I haven't lost all of my willpower. Anyway, till we meet again. I do have some good eating pics on my camera though, just trying to gather that willpower for another day. Happy first day of summer!

Sccooorrreeee! (imagine with a double fist pump and a jump). I've had my eye on these ever since I browsed the Cole Haan site looking for stylish comfy shoes featuring the nike air sole. Checked em out on Zappos, then stalked them over at Nordstrom. $148 was a bit too rich for my wallet for a pair of unnecessary sandals- but the overly helpful Matthew at Nordstrom let me know they'd be marked down at the half-yearly sale. So 2 weeks later, I stalked the shoes again, sped down to Hillsdale Mall, and picked them up- for....get this....$89.90! Okay, maybe not the cheapest sandals...but definitely a great deal. I can't wait to walk on the nike clouds- a definite MUST for summer sandals. (and maybe, just maybe- you'll get a few outfit pics too)

aaaaaahhhhhhh...

Isn't it funny how our sense of smell is so closely connected to our memories? I've just slathered on one of my favorite scents- Kai's gardenia body lotion. It brings me back to my Ron Herman days, enveloped in clouds of Kai spray while surrounded by racks of beautiful clothes and great people. I'm extremely picky about my scents. Though I'd like to believe that everyone is, there are those masses who can wear just about anything, from the cloyingly sweet GAP scents to Bath and Body's scented alcohol sprays. Among my most hated are vanilla and sugary sweet smells, and most berry/fruit scents. I'm all about clean, grassy, and light floral scents.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a snob about it...I just really wouldn't be able to stand smelling myself all day that way. I've had my share of mass perfumes, from Gap Grass and Gap Dream to Clinique Happy, Bath and Body Moonlight Path, and B&B White Tea and Ginger.

Now that I've pretty much found my signature scent (heeellllo Jo Malone!) Kai is the only other fragrance that I absolutely love. These two scents are both uplifting (to me!) and make me happy while wearing them. (though Kai in slightly more limited doses). It was such a relief to have finally found my signature scent!

A fashion blog- or any blog, for that matter- is such a visual experience. Though I can browse for hours, and be inspired by many posts, articles, and stories, there is something much more primal about smell. I am instantly transported away by a single whiff, taken over by a feeling of nostalgia, inspiration, relaxation, or pure happiness in a second. Until they invent a smell-o-vision tv/monitor, we'll all still have to live for those purely primal moments, where we can't control our thoughts, feelings, or reactions.

Haha.
Now I just hope no one else around me immediate recoils in disgust to my own personal perfume choices. I just very well may be the stinky person around!

FOR REALS?! the SARTORIALIST and ITALIAN VOGUE PELLE have so much budget restrictions they have to do guerrilla shoots?!?!?! They can't book a location?!?!! Check out the original post here. For those of you who may not know, a guerrilla shoot is what most non-commercial/professional teams do when they don't have the budget for a location or public permit to shoot (which is understandably super expensive). It really is what it sounds like- sneak in, set up, work as quickly (and with as little equipment) as possible, and get out before getting caught. Wow. Guess that really just showcases the dire straits this industry is in...

(sorry for re-posting again...couldn't help but be amazed that this powerful combination of mag and photog doesn't have a location budget...)

Recently I've been plagued with a strange contrast of wanting to be bright and bold, and also subtle and demure. Layers of neutrals beckon to me as equally as punches of brights shout my name. I'm really feeling a new bright pair of sneakers is the perfect solution to the arguing voices in my head.

I love adding unexpected pops of color, personality, and fun with shoes. (think carrie bradshaw). A fun bright sneaker looks fresh and deliberate and most importantly, effortless. It takes a casual look out of pure comfort mode, and makes it fun.

This post is full of eye candy for you all...
(or edible candy is more like it).

Whenever I watch Ace of Cakes, I always find myself thinking what a cool- and strange- career path these artists have taken. Their cakes are more sculpture than baked goods, and sometimes my inner model-making, diorama-loving child comes out. I'm not much of a details/miniatures person (more of the bigger picture variery), but I do love crafting things with my hands and think how cool it is these people get to spend hours working on small crafts among their friends- and get paid to do it. I don't really see it as food, more like arts n crafts, and am slightly unappetized at the thought of actually eating a cake that heavily man-handled. (there are a lot of people who share my feelings...just google it).

But back to my thought...I bet these artists never thought they'd find themselves making a career as cake decorators. It only continues to support my faith that somehow it all works out...and as long as I continue to do the things I love with passion, a perfect career will somehow form itself...with a little of this, and a little of that to keep all of my many desires satisfied.

Again just makes it so apparent how I'm not much of a super detailed person. Don't get me wrong- I am super picky and anal with the smallest details- mainly in fashion and certain graphic design- but I love eating and would rather eat something right away than take my time making rice look like a small winnie-the-pooh-as-a-lion. Okay, so maybe wanting a body shaper isn't the most fashionable thing- but C'MON! Tons of people wear em...you just don't know it! I really am tempted by these long stretchy tanks by Yummie Tummie- touted not to ride/roll up AND make your muffin toppage just disappear. Almost sounds too good to be true. Not sure just how much I believe these before and afters- but I guess the proof is in the pudding. Just gotta get myself out and try one on- with my SKINNIEST jeans. If it's good enough for Alicia Keys, I guess it's good enough for me.

LIFE: backyard beauty

The weather near my house is like an ugly duckling. Usually gray and foggy, no one appreciates the breathtaking views through the mist, but when it's finally time to shine, it really does. I was drawn outside on my day off yesterday, and almost couldn't control where my legs (and car) took me.

Not even 10 minutes from my door, I was greeted by rolling hills, endless unbroken coastline, and crisp, clean air. The entrance to preserved wetlands introduced me to scenic trails that I never knew existed right in my backyard.

looking the opposite direction...no, really, i mean it.

Really?! Just 10 minutes away?! Yeeeeaaah....and usually shrouded in fog. It's funny how you can pass right by something day after day and not even notice how great it is, till the one day it practically slaps you in the forehead.

A change in perspective is a must for all creative folk- writers, designers, musicians, and artists all do it. I felt like such a tourist in my own hometown- but consoled myself by thinking myself such an artiste! Haha.

I took a brisk walk, filled my lungs with crisp ocean air, and wandered around without any thoughts, worries, fears, or plans, and just let the wind and sun clear my mind.

Then proceeded to fill my tummy with some clam chowder, french fries, and a bloody mary while taking in a bit more of the view. Not very nutritious, I know...but I think all of the food groups are represented...!

Shhh....there's something about SF beaches that are just so much more refreshing and cleansing than LA ones... I always feel a bit drained after a day at the beach in SoCal...but don't tell em I said that...

TREASURE HUNTING: more mass market shopping

I needed to pick up a few things from Costco, and stumbled upon a few unexpected finds in the massive bulk cave. I wouldn't really consider this a break in the challenge (read about it here), since they were basically necessity purchases- check out these deals I scored:

Adidas sport socks- $12 for a 6-pack (instead of 2-pack at the sports store)

Speedo one-piece- $20 (instead of $65 at the sports store)

-because swimming at the gym in a bikini makes me feel a bit uncomfortable

Calvin Klein rib tanks- $14 for a 3-pack, returned to the store since I decided I didn't need them

Okay, so not really quite interesting or post-worthy...just felt like sharing. Was a bit surprised to see some decent brands at Costco...

friends and family at old navy (white/grey-$14, heather blue-$7)

Again, not really anything special, but I took advantage of my discount coupon to pick up a basic much-needed black shirt and saw a few sale cardigans. Just some basic, oversized grandpa cardis I know I'll wrap myself up in often (I've already worn them both!), so they were worth it. And of course, all the more attractive at an additional 30% off. Thanks old navy friend! ;)

LIFE: playing tourist- alcatraz

No real fashion here, only a few images that got me thinking. A friend from LA came up to SF for a visit and treated me to a day at Alcatraz. Never been there before, so I experienced it through the new eyes of a tourist. This pic from the bay makes me think of NYC/Long Island ferries and SATC life...

Signs in the gift shop- that for some reason weren't on display in the cell blocks- but maybe I wasn't paying the best attention. Ironic, isn't it? The worst prisoners of their day were entitled to more benefits than a normal, law-abiding citizen is now. If you have been "good" and were raised to follow the rules, you are NOT entitled to any of the above- especially food, clothing, shelter, or medical attention. You're left to fend for yourself, however you may come across these life necessities. If you're that desperate, maybe you should just break the law...

I guess prison is really supposed to be where you learn how to readjust to living among the rest of society. Based on these regulations, I can't quite tell how prison is much different from the life of most law-abiding citizens. Should I really be scared then about committing a crime or being sent to jail??

I guess for convicted sociopaths, living life just like every one else is torture enough.

When I logged into my google reader today, I clicked on the link for the new google play. I'm still a bit behind and trying to figure out what this whole "following people" thing. Have NO IDEA how that works or what it is...so I just ignore- but a bit strange when I get notifications that people are following me (and not my blog). So yes...some other newfangled feature thingie for google. I clicked on it...and was delightfully surprised!

I was brought to a link for Inhabitat, a design blog/zine- and an inspiring story on reverse graffiti. Isn't that cool? The above image is really the cleaned space from a very dirty wall. Hopefully google play doesn't take everyone to the same links, or I guess this story will be moot and blogged to death. But here's to hoping it's a link *really* handpicked just for me.... yeah, right. Enjoy!

TREASURE HUNTING: mini purses!

In a sea of ordinary, it takes a critical and editing eye to spot the pearls through the grains of sand.

Inundated with mass-marketed apparel and accessories, it is a very fine line that separates great personal style from a fleeting trend. On one hand, great personal style is built upon details and cuts that suit your unique taste and personality- but cross a bit too far over into "unique," and you could have a dated trend on your hands.

This weekend I was window browsing (not even window shopping!) at a local ho-hum Macys, checking to see if there were any hidden gems at insanely low clearance prices. Super deals weren't to be found- or maybe my resolve to THE CHALLENGE has enabled me to hold out on unnecessary purchases.

Though mini cross-body bags have been something of a trend the past year or two, I am always on the lookout for something small with great detailing- and maybe some hardware- to punctuate my outfit. There tons of long-strapped small bags around- and in the Macy's purse section, everything looked just a bit too mom...or rather, sensible. In this setting, it was pretty hard to even find anything remotely attractive. I had scary flashbacks to one of my "first" purses, an oval-shaped Esprit cross-body with a medium brown leather strap and plaid leather body. (yes, plaid).

I spied a springy pea-colored bag and took a few fun pics with it- not too bad, right? I could make it work...

Definitely not IN LOVE with it to break my challenge. Maaaaybe if I saw one of these at Macy's prices, I'd defintely bite. I'd be stupid not to.

Yay! I've been tagged with a Kreative Blog Award from pretty little thieves! I feel so honored! :)

1. I like to eat my meals in perfect bites every time, and ration all the things on my plate to last the entire meal. (unless i don't really like something, then i'll try to eat it first)

2. I am a secret nerd and love science museums (well, along with history and art as well). I grew up reading Encyclopedia Brown mysteries and dreaming of being Sally. I used to want to be a marine biologist, but mostly because I love the ocean.

3. I LOVE traveling and spent 12 months backpacking through South East Asia, Australia, and Europe solo.

4. I don't like egg yolks. (or liver...but trying to train myself so I can graduate to the next level of foodie...)

5. I am a certified night owl, and am completely nocturnal if left up to my own devices. Sometimes the OPTION of staying up late or going to bed is comepletely out of my hands, and I just CAN'T sleep early.

6. I love reading magazines cover to cover- even the "filler" stories. (shhh...even Good Housekeeping....you can learn a lot of useful information that way!)

7. I am fairly extreme, and my approach to life is "all or nothing." Because of this, I have played 4 musical instruments throughout my childhood, and haven't touched a single one since college!

LIFE: ethnic ice dancing and rodarte, oh my!

Ice dancing. Maybe not the most exciting sport. Or the most popular. Or even taken very seriously. This year, the Russian ice dancing team caused a lot of controversy with their ill-researched program highlighting the cultural dance, song, and costume of Aboriginal Australians. My initial reaction to their costumes was actually relief- someone did something different- and more importantly, creative- in the field! After hearing a bit more about why people were outraged (like I said, ill-researched...going off of web images...i can just picture this whole routine based off of some google image search?!), and seeing the darkened "skin" bodysuits, I guess it could definitely have been done in better taste- but I definitely applaud their fresh look at skating music, movements, and inspiration from a different source.

I could just imagine one of them hearing an Aboriginal tribal beat and suddenly being hit with the idea that it would make a great dance routine on ice. At least, I hope that's how it went. Makes me think of influential composers and designers.

But really, it's all about taste, and how the look is carried out. Apparently a requirement of this year's competition had the skaters incorporate "folk themes" into their programs. The Americans seemed to have done a better job of it (or maybe because they're Americans, and we're not hearing the bad press), presenting their take on Indian wedding gear and music. Regardless of their authenticity, I would definitely say that they incorporated their theme in a more tasteful manner. (or maybe it's just that it's prettier). Overall, a lot of the ice dancing costumes seemed a bit Halloweenish and hokey...but I'm not going to bother with pics of those.

But back again to designer inspirations. Just a few months back, one of the most well-received collections of Spring 2010 was by Rodarte in September. Graffitied with body-paint tattoos inspired by the Maori tribe, the look was then used by Carine Roitfeld on the cover of French Vogue's November issue. It was, of course, applauded. This woman makes a fortune inspiring others and breaking new ground- it better be good! I guess you could even say the Russians' look may have even been influenced by Rodarte. Or Vogue. However you spin it...they definitely received a different reaction.

Being a designer, a stylist, a CREATOR, is really about the editing. It's amazing how similar seeming details can come together with either great success...or great failure. I love the creative process, and love to see people challenge themselves and what is expected...because NO- I don't want to hear or see another program set to Love Story.

Check out my work featured in the new Work Magazine. We had an adventurous time shooting in a hidden rocky cove at the beach, dodging waves and hopping around to the dry spots. I had a great time shooting chameleon Devon Weiss with my favorite hairstylist, the in-demand Tony Vin, and lots of laughs with Kat Reyes on makeup. Thank goodness photographer Kesler Tran shoots fast, and we were able to climb out of the cove (with all of our gear) just as the sun began to set and the tide started to "lick" our toes (and the rest of our legs!). I had to make sure the crashing waves didn't attack our furs!!

Happy Groundhog day! Wait, I missed that? Well, how about Chinese New Year, Valentines, or President's Day? I missed those too?? Fine then. Happy Olympics watching! I know it's been a bit (well, most of the month of Feb), and not only haven't I gotten you my Vegas pics, I haven't gotten you much of anything else. I just wanted to let you know I've been a bit (obviously) behind on my posting, and tell you I'm well. :) I have a new refreshed viewpoint, a few new projects, and a few new friends! Just digesting it all and finding my focus. I hope you've all been well, and I thank the readers who have stuck with me. Somehow, I've been getting a lot more spam comments and can't figure out where they're coming from....but hope that just means my blog is getting out there more in the sphere...have fun and play nicely!

AfroStyle Magazine's highly anticipated second issue was released today with much fanfare here, and with three fashion stories styled by none other than myself alongside fellow stylist Camille Yvette. In this issue we showcased South African-influenced modern styles and traditional Moroccan fashions.

Actually, to prepare for the styling of these shoots, I was lead by Judah to the most beautiful and well-researched book- part fashion and style, part costume, part anthropological, and part documentary- but all beautiful photography- African Ceremonies by Carol Beckwith. I bought it off Amazon as reference, but will definitely be keeping it in my library. (and it was on sale!) You should check it out- there are some strong connections to some of the things we see in modern fashion- and I just love seeing the crossovers between different countries' clothing- like how some of the Ndebele tribe's blankets that look at bit like South American ponchos...

I LOVE that about clothing.

It's not just something you put on your body- it tells a story, it has a history, it represents a culture, society, or even individual. It makes a statement. I love researching the facts, history, anthropology, sociology- the LIFE of clothing, and how it relates to us all. And it amazes me to see the similarities between both tribal and modern-day dressing between people separated by oceans, miles, years, decades, and lifestyles. Judah had actually recommended Africa Adorned instead, also by Beckwith, but I wasn't able to find a copy of the book (I mean, an affordable copy) as it is currently out of print. It'll be something for my treasure hunts...but can't wait to see where the next project takes me!

In other news, I spent the weekend in Vegas and have lots of pics to update you with, there were so many things to look at- in both awe and disgust! I promise I'll update soon!

I am a FAN of the old classics. Musicals, comedy, dramas...give me some true wardrobe, beautiful people, and a tidy happy ending, and I am satisfied. Growing up, it was a family pastime to watch old movies together. My sister's alltime fave is White Christmas, but I'll take Doris Day, Audrey Heburn- and some COLOR any day...Brigadoon, The Unsinkable Molly Brown, By the Light of the Silvery Moon, Gone With the Wind...yes, I'll take it all, please.

Most people picture scenes from Breakfast at Tiffany's or Sabrina when they think of Audrey Hepburn. Coming from a family of Audrey fanatics, I thought I had seen many of her films growing up, but caught Charade last night for the first time. I was amazed by the wonderful wardrobe in the film- much moreso than the movie itself. Cary Grant isn't too bad either.

She is wearing the most simple, clean, and STATEMENT-y hats throughout most of the movie. Though the clothing is very classic, it is done beautifully-in strong shapes and colors. My favorite is a leopard-print hat in a slightly exaggerated conical shape that seriously takes confidence to pull off. (well, that and bone structure as well.) I also love her wool coat in a striking yellow-gold for the climactic chase scene. So simple, yet so elegant and memorable. How I LOVE how this woman can pull off a hat.

So today is supposed to be the most depressing day of the year. No idea where I read that, probably off a friend's facebook posting. Didn't seem to be too much of a downer, but I thought I ought to finally post something here, at least to let you all know this "depressing" day didn't swallow me up.

It's been SOOO cold here in SF, with our atomic clock posting 44 degrees outside for the last few days- but brrr...it feels like that inside as well! I've been cooking up a storm of cold weather comfort foods, including chili and braised short ribs.

During last week's crazy thunderstorms, I styled the album and promo and shots for the bay area's local star hip hop group, The Pack. When I finally unwrap myself from this blanket, I will post a few pics from the crazy shoot that took place in a frat house...

I've been keeping myself healthy by returning to my regular workouts. Once I'm able to revisit the "skinny rockstar" section of the closet once again, I'll have so many more inspired outfits to keep my creative juices flowing without shopping- CHALLENEGE UPDATE- i have NOT bought any new clothing yet- and it's been 24 days! (haha, it's surprising how long that feels....I've been filling the me-shopping void with cooking and gymming) note-It's fairly hard to keep focused when shopping for a living!! Can't say I won't slip for a hidden treasure- but it will definitely be worth it, and you'll be the first to see what gem breaks my resolve. Until then....

I stepped out a few days ago to a local mall NOT owned by Westfield. (what?! yes, they exist). Granted, it's not the best quality mall, but it has recognizable stores nonetheless. I was amazed by the window displays (and not in a good way), and thought you all might like a peek.

Okay, so yes, I'm always looking at what F21's doing- but mainly since they're one of the few retailers that seem to be doing decently- they're growing and hiring! Their mannequins looked to be channeling a version of Lady Gaga with the abundance of platinum wigs- and one was brazen enough to go out without bottoms! She's coyly covering her plastic bits with her hands, but I'm not buying her innocent act...

Okay, so this image of Bench isn't really too interesting. More interesting was the merchandise inside, but the manager was eying me and practically followed me outside as I took this pic. Apparently it's a brand imported in from the Philippines. Gone are the days where our "rich" country would outsource production of our own popular brands to the Philippines- the tables have turned as we are now selling $2.99 body sprays and "Filipino" t-shirts branded in the Phillippines. I really find that sooo interesting. Wonder what it's going to look like as more American clothing companies continue to struggle...and other imported brands take their place?

I've never seen a B&BW look like this before, with neon yellow signage in every possible open space. It's probably more horrible it's in yellow. Reminded me of ketchup and mustard. Did it make me want to go in? Nope, I strolled right by- amd it doesn't look like anyone else is in there either. Yellow signs on everything!

Last week I went to a networking event put on by the San Francisco Fashion and Merchants Alliance. (whew that's a long name). It was a great time at a super cozy spot- The Otis Lounge- and I had a great time getting to know some SF industry insiders (spent time talking, so no pics for you!) There are talks of a revived SF fashion week...we'll see- but love the enthusiasm!

I'll just blame it on the flash though...I'm pretty sure (or at least hope) my legs weren't this purpley in real-life. Very barneyesque...!

Damn I'm too late. I know, I know...I already told all of you about my challenge, so no- I'm not going to get these...but an extra-cold Christmas in DC had me searching for a suitable alternative to my thin skinned staples- leggings and tights. I knew someone (probably an east-coaster) HAD to have had that thought before, and set out in search of some kind of go-to...be it techno thermal tights or something like that. I scoured the web and came across Plush Apparel. Designer Jennifer Kim must have read my mind (or rather, was a few steps ahead of me) when she came up with her fleece-lined collection.

I haven't seen any of these pieces in person yet, but I think it's just genius. I'm already making my mental shopping list for when my go-to pieces start to wear out and need replacing (or if I make another trip east before the snow clears!). I have my eye on the full tights and leggings. And add those mesh leggings as soon as my new-year's gym resolution kicks in too. Love the beanie too!

It's Christmas-time! Well, this post is a bit later than I would have liked, but I wanted to show off my edible "recycled" gifts for this year. I felt the need to pat myself on the back for such creative packaging, and hopefully you find it at least cute...

I took random empty tins from around the house (Japanese sweets tend to come in tins) and boxed up an assortment of chocolate and ginger cookies...and topped it off with a multifunction bow- rubber bands both hold the tin securely together and also make up the "ribbon" bow on top, all collected from random newspapers and vegetables. I especially liked the blue-on-blue bows!

Inspired by the countdown to the year's most commercialized holiday (Christmas), and after a massive editing and weeding of the closet, I've come up with a CHALLENGE for 2010.

As much as I love looking through magazines, fashion blogs, and many other sources of fashion images, I was a bit sickened this year by all of the "buy me!" screaming from every direction. After a massive edit, I made $112 (which unfortunately will go to pay for my recent speeding ticket!) at the Crossroads Trading in SF. With an overwhelming urge to purge it all and start fresh, I ended up selling a lot of the pieces I had been holding onto for various reasons. (a lot of great pieces I had been saving- for no reason).

Even after the massive purge (I sold them about $350 of merchandise for their sales floor), I looked around and still felt that I had too much clothes. Granted, though I still have a lot more clothes than the average joe, I definitely have a lot less than most stylists. Left with a full (small sized) closet, dresser, and a few storage bins, I definitely have more than enough for everything I need (everyday, parties/events, working out, lounging) and then some.

I am in the middle of reading Thomas J. Stanley's Stop Acting Rich..and Start Acting Like A Real Millionaire. It's basic message is repeated over and over and practically hits you on the head, page by page...telling you to live beneath your means to come out a millionaire. I know, the title sounds like a self-help book...but is actually written by the foremost researcher and expert on the affluent- with an emphasis on marketing, sales, and lifestyle data. He lists specific brand names that millionaires prefer. I was told that this wasn't his best book- but I found it very interesting, having worked in high-end retail and contemporary manufacturing. I think his previous books may have been more insightful, but he did pound his message into me.

After cleaning out my closet and still being left with gobs of clothes- and feeling like I had already pared it down, I realized that this wasn't healthy for my new (personal) economic reform. I vow not to make any clothing purchases for the entire year. Accessories (including tights) and the odd shoe will not be counted as purchases...we'll see how I fare this year!!!

I spent the Christmas holiday in snowy DC and luckily ran into Donovon riding the metro. He injected a much-needed blast of cold weather fashion into the many dreary black winter wool ensembles on the street. Donovon, previously a NYC model, mastered the art of layering with different colors, patterns, and textures, for a stylish and delightfully fresh, un-stuffy look. Love the coat!

There's just something so nice about building a connection with someone who completely gets you. I've spent my life doing things that interest me, finding where I fit in the world...from the corporate, the business, the streets, the academic, and the unknown- only to reinforce that I am not a "practical" person. I am a dreamer, an idealist, a passionate worker who reaches as far as my imagination can take me. I love a little of everything, and don't often come across others who really completely "get" me- but when I do, it's a stellar relationship. I think everyone needs something like that in their lives...so thank you to those who really make me feel understood, I wholeheartedly appreciate your friendship. Thank you.

WANT: short lace up booties

All I'm wanting for right now is a perfect pair of little flat lace up booties. To tell you the truth, every fall I'm ALWAYS in want of the perfect pair of boots. Something to lust after. Something to keep myself on the lookout at all times. Something that screams of perfection- that no other substitute can fulfill. This year is no different, and I've been lusting for the perfect pair of boots. And of course, while the Loeffler Randall beauties I wrote about earlier are *available,* they are not quite affordable...for me, at least. The next most perfect boot would be something similar but shorter...

At the moment, I'm imagining all of the great outfits I could put together with my (imaginary) perfect boots, and OH they look so good on in my head. Nevermind my oversized calves. Nevermind my skinny jeans aren't fitting so well right now. Nevermind I don't even own these boots!! Oh well. Don't we all have the perfect wardrobe in our imaginations?

I also caught MTV's The City on tv today. It was a pleasant surprise that was really entertaining and I couldn't stop watching. Yes, there was the drama...but there was also a bit more of them "working" than there was in The Hills....don't laugh at me! Yes, I'll admit it..I watched it and enjoyed it!

I've been busy this past week prepping and pulling for the most fabulous editorial shoot. I won't give too many details away, but it's going to be BEAUTIFUL! It's been a blast being able to have fun with the concept and really run with it. Most of all, I've been working with a lot of smaller, independent designers for this shoot who all create their pieces from start to finish from scratch in their homes/studios. Our story is taking on a couture vibe, and these handmade, one-of-a-kind pieces are absolutely beautiful and perfect for the editorial. It is so amazing- and definitely inspirational- to see these designers crafting exquisite pieces by hand out of love. A small designer is no less of a designer than one that has "made" it, in fancy showrooms and all, and the creations I've seen are the result of passion, love, and dedication. If you've ever felt like making something yourself, you should try it...it is great satisfaction to take something born from an idea and see it develop through to its completion. I'll keep you updated with pics of the shoot- time to sleep. Goodnight!

STYLED: the reality of a stylist's life

The road to becoming a stylist is definitely not an easy or glamorous one. There are long hours, hard physical labor, and many sleepless nights. But there is a bit of magic that happens when you work with an amazing team, and it makes it all worth it. With this small window left up to faith, things can also go horribly, horribly wrong. Every day and every shoot is a bit like a roller coaster for me. A little fear, a lot of exhilaration, some moments of panic, but always a fun and thrilling ride. And the company you keep only makes it better.

For anyone who doesn't quite understand what a stylist does, I sort of equate it to being in a band. You have your photographer, model, makeup artist, and hair stylist- much like you have a lead singer, guitar, bass, and drummer. There is usually a leader who emerges from the pack to guide everyone towards a cumulative vision, but if all the musicians don't mesh well or don't bring their "A" game to a show, the outcome will be less than stellar. But if everything is aligned and the chemistry is right, then there is no limit to how spectacular it could be- and there is definitely a bit of "magic" involved.

Basically I am in charge of bringing the clothes to the shoot. But that's not all of it. That entails getting the clothes, prepping them, packing them, unpacking them, steaming them, making sure they don't get trashed or damaged, damage control, repacking them, prepping them for returns, and making sure it's all taken care of in a short time period. But that's not the most fun part. Often times stylists work closely with photographers, art directors, or magazine editors and really lead the team's direction for a concept- definitely in charge of more than just the clothes. That's the part I enjoy- the collaborative creative vision.

If everyone is allowed to express themselves creatively while also working together as a team, the outcome can be stellar, and better than anything I or anyone else could have imagined individually. So yes, it's a very collaborative process.

But getting there...

There's a lot of schlepping. Bringing things there or there. And loading and unloading. And pushing and pulling. Heavy racks, heavy garment bags, heavy lifting. You get the idea. I sweat like no other during a shoot!

There's a lot of being on your feet. Walking, running, kneeling, sitting, standing. Super pretty shoes (read: heels) are never a good idea on a shoot. You'll leave crippled.

There's a lot of being prepared for the unexpected. Safety pins, tape, and creative solutions are your best friend. There is always SOMETHING that doesn't go as planned during a shoot. You can let it get in the way, or you can let it become your advantage. You have to be able to roll with the punches. A shoot is like a live being, and you can't control it, no matter how much you plan it out. I like to keep myself as over-prepared as possible, which can leave me pretty tired the day before a shoot, but it definitely helps.

You have to be organized, business savvy, an excellent self-promoter, an even better self-critic, a great problem solver, a team player, and of course, a creative thinker. To me, it's a fun and rewarding career since it is not one-sided. Being an effective communicator is definitely a plus, though having awesome fashion sense also doesn't hurt. ;) The pay is often less than stellar...and you really have to love what you're doing not only to grow and move up, but also deal with the realities and costs of living of life. I can definitely say that I'm not the only one here feeling the hit of the economy. I'm continuing to aim for the stars and working hard to change with the changing economy, so keep an eye out for more things to come from me- but of course, I definitely won't let them go unnoticed! :)

I find it very interesting how blogs have sort of changed the structure, or ladder, that you climb to become a successful stylist. It seems a very different path to take towards the same destination, and there are individuals who have been able to rise to a stylist position by showcasing their personal style rather than the style they've given to others. I wonder if that's the new direction that stylists need to take to compete...it's definitely a vehicle for impressive self promotion! I mean, I guess it's not even just my own view or thought, but it is actually true. I applied for a posted staff stylist opportunity for a small store- and later found that the "stylist" they hired was actually a fashion blogger. No, I'm not bitter, but instead feel in awe of really being able to witness change happening- and now challenge myself to learn how to change with it.

I wanted to humanize the process a bit and let you know despite all of the "I did this, I did that, look-at-me!" types of posts (my self-promotion), I'm still a humble, curious, inquisitive, critical person who has the same thoughts, doubts, and dreams that I've always had, and that I think you probably have too. Not sure just who's out there reading this, but I hope you enjoy the glimpse into my life and are able to find a connection on some level.

INSPIRATION: tree-lined streets

Maybe it's the romance of it all. Maybe it's imagining I'm walking down the street of some quaint European city. But I think most of all it's the hint of nature and greenery in a mostly brown Los Angeles.

While walking down the street in Culver City a week ago, I stumbled upon a few cute little eateries along a shaded, tree-lined street. I can't vouch for the food at Saint Amour (or Starbucks, haha) since I didn't stop to eat there, but I immediately fell in love with the hidden, unassuming brasserie and made a mental note to try it some time. (I guess this post is my reminder!) It didn't at all feel like I was walking past a trite French restaurant "trying" hard to transport me to Paris. Even Starbucks a few doors away has a fresh, clean look. Even the dude outside seems to be getting a chestfull of plant-oxygenated air. It really just lifted my spirits to feel that I had been transported out of LA, but even for a minute.

STATE OF THE UNION: forever 21 takeover

Last week I went to the world's largest Forever 21. Or at least it sure felt like it. After running a few errands in the south bay, I found myself at Lakewood Mall near Long Beach. They appeared to have had a bit of a renovation since the last time I've been there, but nothing too major. I noticed a smallish F21 near the entrance, but kept walking to see what else there was.

After a few sections of mall, I came across another F21, and noticed it was HUGE. It was only one floor, but seemed to sprawl across most of the mall. It was sectioned off- and had signs and hangtags in one section for "Forever 21's first contemporary collection." A salesperson let me know that it used to be the old MERVYN'S space...and now was an F21...one of TWO in the SAME mall??!! Couldn't really tell you what else was in that mall, except a smallish Macy's- that definitely had less customers than the F21. (the smaller F21 was completely empty). But they're not alone- numerous malls seem to have multiple F21s! (can't remember which, although Glendale springs to mind- even though it's one at Glendale, and one at Americana)

Just down the road in Cerritos, RackedLA just wrote about how the old Mervyn's space there was also taken over by an F21.

Kind of reminds me of Noah's Bagels. Yeah...put one at every Starbucks...see what happens. I wonder what will happen to F21? There's only so much fast fashion and disposable clothing a person (or a county, for that matter) can handle. The growth is going to stop eventually. When, how, and why, I have no idea- but whenever a consumer driven trend skyrockets like this, there has to be some kind of downward spiral...because everything that goes up must go down...right?

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT: Raquel Allegra

Recently I pulled a few delicately shredded tees from Raquel Allegra to use in an editorial (photos to come). Though the shredded tee craze has already hit its peak on the internet, it has yet to peak in clothing available to buy in the world of retail. I was amazed to see the delicate nature of these tees in person, and can't imagine how they deal with this in production. I was told at their headquarters that they are all shredded by hand, which confirmed my suspicions- there is no way this fabric (similar to shredded cheesecloth) could have been machine-made like this.

Unless you do a bit of searching around on the internet, there isn't anything written on the designer's site that hints at the best part about this line- that it is very eco-driven and sustainable at its core. ElephantJournal did some great research, finding some info on the fabric sourcing for the line in an Eco-Collection newsletter available at the MAGIC tradeshow. Allegra takes old, used tees from the LA county jail and refashions them into unique, shredded pieces of art that don't hold any hints of their previous home.

What I especially like is the lack of fuss made over the source of the fabric- eco or not- for these tees. It makes it less of something that appeals only to eco-friendly "granola" types, but aims at everyone. By downplaying the fact that they are made of recycled fabric, it makes it seem less novel, and more normal...which I hope more designers will begin to do- although I'm hoping the downplay isn't because they think potential customers might be scared off by the fabric's origins!

This is a definitely creative approach to sourcing fabric for your tshirt line. Keep it coming! I hope it inspires more designers (and DIY artisans) to think of creative ways to repurpose commonplace items- or even those looked upon in disgust- into objects to be desired.

BOTTOM-UP FASHION: Raquel Allegra, & Norma Kamali

There are a gazillion people wearing shredded tees out there. Maybe all mostly DIY. Why? Thanks to the speed in which trends- especially ones you can do yourself at home for much, much less- spread across the internet via fashion blogs like wildfire.

This time last year, for her spring/summer 2009 collection, designer Raquel Allegra sent her hand-shredded re-fashioned t-shirt creations down the runway. Almost immediately, bloggers picked up on the look and creatively figured out how to work with what they had to create similarly trashed-yet-delicate looks- namely through an excellent tutorial by the resourceful blogger Childhood Flames. The trend spread like a Los Angeles wildfire fueled by the Santa Anas- and that's fast and strong.

The look was seen on fashionable people all around on their daily pics- and if anything was already tired out before the trend really got good facetime in stores. I feel for this small company, as not only does it cost a lot to make all of the samples, but it also costs quite a bit to put on a runway show...before a single piece is even sold...and by the time it gets to the stores, it's already hit its peak.

Norma Kamali, a pioneer and legend in the fashion world (be sure to read her wiki if you don't know her), has also noticed the fast pace in which bottom-up trends are affecting designer sales and timelines. In order to close the gap between runway shows and when that merchandise is available to customers (usually a 2 month production window, on average), she has made the pieces shown at her Spring 2010 show available immediately- though her website, and also more evolutionarily through a new app created for the iphone. I admire how Kamali is adapting to the environment around her, acknowledging the change in the way fashion is being distributed. Very refreshing, and very necessary.

I stumbled across these images from UK Vogue on Fashion Gone Rogue. I love the very crafty feel of these looks- marrying fashion and actual art. (and crafts too!) I love how creatively the stylist fashioned garments from every day household items- especially the fringe on the skirt made from a mop. My favorite is the tea-towel corset. All looks so now...Fire up those creative juices! When I take a few better pictures, I will show off a few handicrafts of my own used for shoots- though not purposely made to be "handmade."

Every winter tights and legwarmers come back into the picture, mainly as a cute option for warm winterwear. This fall and coming spring is no exception. With platform peep toe shoes ruling the runways and streets both this fall and also on spring's runways, and leggings still continuing to prevail as the pant of choice, I've been noticing a newer trend happening- longer leggings that cover the heel and most of the arch of the foot- basically full tights with the toes cut off.

the past few days I've seen a lot of pics showing the stirrup / toeless tight look, but unfortunately I can't seem to find any pics of what I was looking at...so I guess you just have to use your imagination...!

Though this style has been around, it is all the more apparent now that open toe shoes are the trend. I've been seeing more stirrups, and that's going to continue morphing into toeless and even heel-less (i bought some! pic above) versions. Tights and other leg coverings are the easiest and cheapest way to freshen up an old oufit- just take a look at Sheena at the Uniform Project. The best part is that the 80s flashdance style legwarmer has been reinterpreted, and you're going to start seeing it a LOT more. I believe in my prediction so much (or rather, I was inspired to spruce up some of my looks) that I caved and bought an assortment of legwear to satisfy any whim when it hits:

-loooong slouchy legwarmer-esque socks

-not quite so long slouchy socks

-fuzzy leg warmers

-japanese leg warmers more like thin socks without feet

-japanese tabi socks- toeless and heeless

I'd totally layer all of these. Maybe with a sheer tight underneath, or with a looser legwarmer over. I'm sure you're wondering about the striped tabi socks- I imagine them with my red ballet flats and leggings. I can also see the orange leg warmers layered with shades of grey (no black!), or worn low covering just the arch/heel/lower calf, layered over another open toe tight. Such a cute pop under boots too. Can't wait for it to start getting cooler (yes, another heatwave in LA..boo!)

TREND FORECAST: textured knitwear

Why aren't there many good knitwear designers in the US? It's a dying art, but there is a breath of life left in the handmade art in Eurpe and Australia. I am completely inspired by these designers I stumbled upon- only found by doing a decent amount of research hunting down knit designers. It's actually a bit difficult to search, especially for any US designers, but once I found the right vein, there were inspired designers by the handfull. I was happy to have stumbled upon Knit Kicks, who does a great job of showcasing knit newcomers that have already made an impact on the scene.

I love love LOVE textured knits, from cables to ropes and braids, great knits add a sort of refind artiness to outfits that many other fabrics can't quite acheive. It adds an interest that works so well with other silkier fabrics for layering, but ultimately great textured knits add a sort of human element a garment. One that makes you want to wrap yourself in knitted chunky coziness. One that makes a person appear "soft". The new knits come in a wide range, from soft and fine to sculpted and shaped. Here are a few striking designs from some designers I spotted- and you can be sure I will be spotlighting a few of these! There is something about doing what I love, researching inspiring things, listening to good music, and surfing the internet in the middle of the night that makes me feel a bit indulgent. For a born night-owl like me, there is a small version of myself in my head, 15 years old again, expecting to hear my mom yell at me to go to bed. It's like a constant reading-under-the-covers-with-a-flashlight feeling. It's when I get the best ideas. It's when my best work is done. I hope that feeling never goes away.

Okay, so I know this has been around for a while. (176 days to be exact.)- but the video is new! I had come across this blog before and then couldn't quite remember where I had stashed the link. I suddenly thought about it today while browing blogs and looking through many girls' daily outfit posts and changes, realizing how many of them didn't quite reuse many of their pieces, but instead always show what pretty new things they've bought.

If you haven't heard about The Uniform Project, it is an exercise in sustainable fashion by Sheena Matheiken. She is wearing the same little black dress (with 7 copies) every day for a year, changing up accessories, footwear, and various layers to keep the looks fresh. She is doing this with minimal additional spending, instead reusing, rethinking, and repuurposing things she either already owns, or with items donated by her supporters.Ultimately, the daily blog is serving a higher purpose, and for every day that Sheena doesn't buy new clothing or accessories, she puts that money towards the Ankanksha Foundation, a grassroots organization built to raise edutcation funding in Indian slums. Her mission statement can be found here.

I really appreciate this attitude toward fashion. It takes away the disposable nature of modern clothing and instead makes wearers think creatively and indirectly makes a statement about longevity. (even with 7 copies, if each dress is washed per wearing, it needs to stand up to 52 washings- take that F21!!!) In some ways, this is actually more difficult to do than simply going out to buy whatever it is you might need on a whim. I came across another blog, CAGreinvented, who was also smitten by Sheena's project. So smitten, she took her on in a Little Black Dress Showdown. It was interesting to read how CAG was wiped out by the end of the challenge- it takes a lot more creativity and thought to rethink and re-purpose an item- fashion or not- and is something we should all do more of.

Over the past year I've been purging myself of any extraneous clothing, shoes, and accessories that are not necessary or haven't been used in a while. Though it feels refreshing to have less, it is also a contradiction- as a stylist, you never know what gem you'll dig out that will finish off a killer look. Guess that's the chance I'll just have to take...

STATE OF THE UNION: Documentary- Schmatta

I REALLY want to see this HBO documentary on the garment industry in the US, "Schmatta: Rags to Riches to Rags." Though it's focus is on New York, the fashion capital of America, its message on manufacturing in the states is the same no matter NY or LA. Having worked in LA's apparel industry at a company that produced everything locally in Los Angeles, this film really hits home. It was difficult to compete against other companies who outsourced to Asia and other countries, and the direct outcome defintely hit hard. The film trailer states that in 1965, 95% of American fashion was produced in New York's garment center. Now, in 2009, it is down to 5%.

American Apparel isn't the only American manufacturer fighting the good fight...just one of the more visible ones...

Unfortunately, I don't have HBO or I would have seen it yesterday. Anyone want to share?

LIFE: impoverished LA?

Driving around in South Los Angeles yesterday with the windows rolled down during strange heat wave, I was hit in the face with the stench of rotting garbage. It was like a slap in the face, and I recoiled in shock, trying not to inhale. I find it often smells like that in the area, with the unrelenting sun beating down on the concrete jungles of the area south of Downtown without a breeze for relief- but yesterday was the worst.

You're wondering what this has to do with fashion? LA's largest and most visible clothing lines are located in South LA, mostly Vernon, to be exact. Guess, BCBG, and True Religion are among the many manufacturers that call Vernon home, not only producing goods overseas but also right in here in Los Angeles.

The stench was one that was instantly familiar, and I was immediately transported back to Cambodia. Fresh on my mind from the previous post, the smell of trash, heat, rotting trash (because of the heat), and pollution, along with the sights, sounds, and smells of outdoor food stands and trucks rattling by left me confused. I felt a strange familiarty tug at my heart having spent 6 months in South East Asia, but was also repulsed at the same time. We are really all not that different from Cambodia, after all.

It's been a busy week. Running around pulling for multiple shoots left me little time and energy to really absorb the scene that is LA fashion week. This weekend marked the "official" close to LA fashion "Week" for Spring/Summer 2010 -and was just the start of the festivities around the rest of the city. After peeping a few fresh outfits out of the crowd at Chic Little Devil's party with Jerell Scott, we went down the street for Lost In A Supermarket at T&A Showroom. It was a refreshing sight, with the crowd a wide mix of people and styles.The vibe was less LA scene, and more underground NY. Camille turned heads with her vintage fringe top and white denim combo. Completely eye catching and totally on-trend, the look was also totally her.

I was going through a friend's blog and reading about his recent trip to Senegal, and looking through pictures from his travels. His feelings of reverse culture shock, and acute awareness of the little things we not only take for granted here but consume in excess, reminded me of my experiences during (and upon return from) my yearlong backpacking trip through South East Asia. (another blog)

I appreciate the call back to basics, and while it is currently fashion week here in LA, I remember that there is more to life than running around from party to party. I appreciate the many experiences- not only the luxury of free time I had, and of course pretty postcard locales, but also the uncomfortable feelings that ultimately resulted in learning and growth.

In the world of fashion and styling, it is easy to get caught up in appearances, or who/what is the newest, hottest, coolest thing...but I am really liking the small changes that happening now that consumers are becoming more conscious about what they are spending their money on...because there are more important things than being the best dressed one out there. Being the mindful of the world around you, and putting yourself out there, can be the best, most beautiful thing you can do for yourself. These pics are just my visual reminder to step out and become a little uncomfortable once in a while.

STATE OF THE UNION: Richard Chai Love

Not to be a killjoy on the current state of our economy, here is another post on how the recession is affecting our consumer driven lives. Richard Chai's new secondary line, Richard Chai Love is taking a proactive step towards adapting to the fashion consumer's current lifestyle. Instead of denying reality by declaring that he is "so over" the recession like many other designers out there, Richard Chai embraced his customers and decided to show his secondary line during his Spring 2010 runway slot instead of his primary high fashion line. I'm loving all of it, and feel an unmistakable 90's era (read: recession) return to grunge and minimalism in both the same line.

Do people really want to see designer fantasies played out on the runway, or is the fashion on the runways out of touch with reality? We'll see how (or if) Chai's choice affects his numbers once the clothing is available to the masses.

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT: Prabal Gurung

I really liked the soft, detailed, structured looks of Prabal Gurung's SS2010 collection. My favorite looks were the white bow-tie lapel suit, the white one-shoulder dress with the feather underlay, and the beige dress with black gauze "bandage-wrappings" (hinting at a bit goth). I'm a sucker for muted neutrals, especially sheer blacks, and hard-to-name beige and blush tones. Gurung's clothes stood out from the rest, precisely tailored, crisp and clean, and tastefully dramatic. None of the pieces were screaming for attention, while all of them were definitely attracting it in a effortlessly chic way. Makes me hope that I'd appear just as effortless if I were to wear them...

STATE OF THE UNION: retail signs

A few weeks ago, AFTER the arrival of "new" fall merchandise, this is what the salesfloor of a popular Bay Area Nordstrom looked like. The expanse of empty carpet felt naked to me, and I had NEVER seen a salesfloor this empty before. EVER. It is interesting to see how one retailer dealt with the plummeting sales numbers- by buying as tight as possible, and not hanging on to any excess merchandise. Anyone who has ever merchandised a store will focus a detailed eye on the singular face-outs attached to full hangbars on the wall...which would normally be full of clothes.

It would be very very interesting to see this image in a side-by-side comparison with Macy's, who appeared to have the exact opposite philosophy at the exact same time. (unfortunately I didn't take any) "Pre-fall" sales racks cluttered the sales floor, and items were marked down in huge percentages before their selling seasons had even begun.

Today I visited Loehmanns, where normally finding a great deal feels like a treasure hunt. I usually have to sift through racks and racks until I find something that doesn't scream "leftovers." Today, however, I happened to catch the designer clearance sale. There were actually many racks full of great jackets and skirts- ones I would actually be excited to wear! But though discounted, their prices were still pretty killer. There seemed to be a large discrepancy between things priced in the $100 range, and then a leap into the $500 range. Of course, all of the great pieces I loved were in the $700-$1000 range. Darn this expensive eye of mine! A thousand dollars is still a thousand dollars, no matter how great the designer....

A non-clothing related sign: Take a look at these Cheez-Its spotted yesterday while grocery shopping, . Notice their price (yah, i know it's kind of small)- $3.69 for the SMALL box and $2.99 for the LARGER box. Granted, this wasn't a discount store (it was Gelsons), but I'm sure the price difference is visible even at larger chain supermarkets. I believe the bigger box is from the older stock, at the previous price...and the smaller box is from the new stock, at the new price point. We're going to be paying more...for less.

Kind of sounds like the Payless slogan, doesn't it? Only, in reverse...

Can't wait to see how the spring lines roll out in the stores.

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT: Rodarte SS2010

Though I'm still looking at the numberous spring collections, with more to come, one line in particular had captured my attention a couple of weeks ago- and continued to hold it. The spring offerings from Rodarte feel inspired, pretty, distressed, textured, airy, and heavy all at once. Though other designers also had interesting and creative pieces within their collections, Rodarte had a collection consisting of one strong look after another. I really like the yellow lighting/fog and black grit runway as well. Very well thought out and excecuted collection.

LIFE: beach wedding

Linen suits, sunflowers, shawls, and bare feet abound! This weekend's beach wedding was the introduction of fall, and a kiss goodbye to summer. The beach was the perfect setting for an intimate, laid back ceremony. What a difference setting, decor, and clothing play in the overall mood of an event...!

The dilemma? What to wear!? Something that would transition from sunny ceremony to evening sunset and through to nighttime outdoor reception...

In the coming months I see ethnic/tribal prints, metal armour-like embellishments, and safari influenced fashions that have ruled the runways and streets for the past year continuing into spring. Though everyone has been scrutinizing signs that the economy is picking up, the uncertainty and influence of other underdog countries has definitely been visible- and strong. I don't think we're quite done with global style yet- we're just getting started.

With so many magazines seeing their death, and so many more blogs rising to the challenge, fashion addicts are getting their fixes from all across the internet (and world), and we will definitely be seeing more international fashion blogs as other countries begin to see the effects of a growing economy and rising quality of life (read: more consumerism). The more wearable pieces within collections of the most influential designers had definite traces of a globally aware customer in mind. Spring 2010 collections were not overtly sexy, but more experimental and slightly ambiguous.

People are looking more and more towards working and living abroad, and those lifestyle changes are defintiely going to be an ongoing trend within fashion and our lives. I also noticed an influx of people traveling to South East Asia in the past few months, a region previously seen as exotic and very far off and foreign- but is now widely accepted and open for mass tourist travel. I see Africa gaining popularity and momentum in becoming not only the design scene's muse as it's been, but also the next destination of choice and inspiration for the general public. Watch out for Africa!

Growing up, I devoured magazines of all sorts- and loved when I was able to get my hands on Japanese fashion magazines in particular. They were years ahead of their time, many focusing on street style, showing the many different looks of girls found out and about, and often featured the contents of their handbags. Even though I didn't know who they were, I got a thrill out of seeing what was in their purses, the cute trinkets they kept, and how neat everything was in little pouches. So sneak a peek all you like and indulge in those voyeur fantasies- here's mine to kick it off...enjoy!

I always get a feeling of nostalgia when the blazing LA summer weather takes on a slight hint of fall. The balmy nights of dry Santa Ana breezes make me itch for early evening walks outside, reminiscent of after dinner walks in Tuscany, or even the wonders of starting a new school year. Though those times are long gone, a trip to Cafe Midi at American Rag brings back that same nostalgia of another time. I think of effortless style and soft cashmeres to match the timeless cafe culture. It had been a while since I stopped in to have a cappuccino here, but the wicker chairs, mosiac tiles, and white tablecloths instantly take me away.

Here is a sneak peek behind the scenes from the AfroFusion Editorial for AfroStyle Magazine's second issue, which was shot a couple of weeks ago. Staff photographer Cameron also put together a slideshow and separate promo video for the issue, which you can view on youtube. You can see a small sliver of me with my coral beanie on behind everyone. It was a crazy fun -and tiring- shoot day, with many many wardrobe changes, but our amazing team knocked it out of the park.

This beautiful leather boot has been calling my name since I saw it styled in the Geox store marketing a couple of months ago. I haven't tried it on yet, but it looks like the perfect fix for my runner's calves. The long cuff disguises the shape of the leg (and calf!) like a pant. Geox are kind of sneaky...they're designer and comfort shoe rolled into one...although the 4 inch heel doesn't quite fit into the comfort category...

STYLED: Lily Blue Designs Fashion Show

Today's show was the most spectacular event I've worked at- in the most unexpected way. I collaborated with the very creative and free spirited designer Lily Blue to create the overall looks for her feminine, organic, nature-inspired line. The theme of the collection was "Urban Goddess," which brought the fantasy of mermaids, wood nymphs, and fairies to earth in gritty downtown Los Angeles.

Fourteen models, three videographers, four photographers, four makeup artists, three hairstylists, two wardrobe stylists, and two stylist assistants took the streets and subways of LA by storm. A trip up and down the red carpet at Hollywood and Highland, shots taken by the Associated Press (!), an impromptu shoot on a police car, and a runway show on the subway all made for a very interesting show.
